According to the data of the 5-days "May 1st" Labor Day holiday released by Netlink platform, UnionPay Co., Ltd., and Alipay platform, people all across China spent and traveled more than they did at the same time in the last two years – during and before the Covid-19 pandemic.

The data released by the Netlink platform highlights that the Net Union platform processed 8.5 billion cross-institutional online payment transactions with a total value of 5.06 trillion RMB. The average number of daily transactions were up by 26.1% and 94.9% while the average daily transaction value was up by 46.5% and 88.0% compared to the same time period in the last two years, respectively.

As per the UnionPay data, the platform transaction amount reached a record high of 1.91 trillion RMB – an increase of 5.5% over the same period last year. Plus, the number of UnionPay mobile transactions on key online travel agency platforms increased by 550% year-on-year, and the total transaction amount increased by 613% year-on-year, pointing out the surge in tourism activities.

Alipay also released a "May Day" outing data report of May 1 to May 3, 2021, calling attention to the 200% year-on-year increase in transaction volume of scenic spots across the country, 120% year-on-year increase in hotel transactions, which also nearly doubled as compared to the same period in 2019, and 250% year-on-year increase in the overall number of consumer visits in duty-free shops.

What’s more is that the consumption is led by the young post-90s generation and new first-tier cities, consisting of Chengdu, Hangzhou, Chongqing, Tianjin, Nanjing, and Xi'an.    All in all, 230 million people traveled and the total tourism revenue reached 113 billion RMB during the Labor day holidays in May 2021, marking the revival of trade, travel, and tourism in China.chi
